If you're looking for a blend of education, conservation, and natural beauty in Boca Raton, the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center is a must-visit. Nestled on a 20-acre coastal preserve, this center offers a unique glimpse into Florida's diverse ecosystems and marine life.

Established in 1984, Gumbo Limbo Nature Center is a collaborative effort between the City of Boca Raton, the Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District, and Florida Atlantic University. The center is dedicated to environmental education, research, and conservation, making it a cornerstone for ecological awareness in South Florida .

Sea Turtle Conservation

One of the center's standout features is its commitment to sea turtle conservation. Gumbo Limbo operates a rehabilitation facility that treats injured or sick sea turtles, aiming to release them back into their natural habitat. The center also conducts sea turtle nesting surveys and offers educational programs to raise awareness about these endangered creatures

Exploring the Ecosystems

Visitors can immerse themselves in various natural habitats:

  • Boardwalk Trails: Stroll through the coastal hammock forest on elevated boardwalks, offering a serene experience amidst native flora.

  • Butterfly Garden: Witness a vibrant array of butterflies in a garden designed to attract and support these pollinators.

  • Observation Tower: Climb Jacob's Outlook, a 40-foot-tall tower providing panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes .

Marine Aquariums and FAU Research

The center houses large outdoor aquariums showcasing various marine species native to Florida's coastal waters. Additionally, the on-site Florida Atlantic University Marine Science Laboratory offers insights into ongoing marine research, with opportunities for visitors to engage with scientists and learn about their studies.
